POOR DISCIPLINE IN SINGAPORE SCHOOLS

A letter appeared in the Straits Times online Forum page asking the Ministry of Education (Singapore) to review the pay of relief teachers (untrained teachers get SGD $65 a day for 5.5 hours work).

This was not what surprised me. The letter-writer bemoaned about the poor discipline in his school. One student even challenged him to a fight outside school he  wrote.

Singapore students lack respect for their teachers. This is the result of us slavishly adhering to western norms. Even the Attorney General in an interview mentioned about this lack of respect for teachers. Unless the trend is reversed, discipline in Singapore schools will degenerate  further.
