In praise of …Singapore school teachers (Ministry of Education, Singapore

Hate or love Singapore school teachers, the indisputable fact is that they work in a pressure cooker education system under the omnipresent Singapore Ministry of Education.

Now, you may counter this with “Whose work isn’t tough?” but the crucial difference is that teachers deal with humans, spoilt students and their arrogant and interfering parents, and as we all know too well, relationships are some of the most difficult things in life to sustain and maintain well.

Throw into this mix timid school heads and officials and the picture becomes even more intolerable.

Yet most teachers stay the course.

Singapore teachers are well-trained at the National Institute of Education (Nanyang Technological University), and their dedication is admirable despite the disciplinary challenges they face daily in the classroom and exasperation with school heads and officials who lack empathy.
