Learning dialects in Singapore

I have never agreed with the government policy of forcing people to learn only English and Mandarin and abandoning dialects.

This means many have grown up not knowing how to speak the dialects of their parents or grandparents.

A knowledge of dialects adds to the cultural richness of a family. But what is more important is it promotes greater bonding within the family.

So I was much cheered to read a newspaper report that more people are attending dialect classes. Well done.

Let me teach you a few words of Hainanese.

hu dare=where are you going

chia bui buong = have you eaten

bung dai = shit

bung jio = urinate

mai nam = don’t play
