Crime in Johor, Malaysia

A report on crime-prone areas in Johor appeared in The New Paper today. Among them are Tampoi, Pelangi, JB and others, all frequented regularly by Singaporeans. All police chiefs in Johor have been ordered to take action to reduce crime in areas under their charge.

Nothing new really. In response to reports in the Straits Times about how rife crime was in Johore last year, particularly in JB, the authorities there assured us that more cops would patrol in places frequented by Singaporeans, and that there would be mobile police posts to help combat crime.

Clearly, these measures were ineffective.

So that is why the latest police initiative must be taken with a pinch of salt. If they can curb crime in Johor, tourism in the state will boom.
