No World Cup in Singapore?

Soccer fans must have reacted with shock and disbelief at news that Singapore might be deprived of watching the World Cup next year.

FIFA has still not accepted the joint bid by Singtel and Starhub.

But it has accepted bids by 200 other countries.

The prospect of being denied World Cup soccer must have spoilt the day for many people today.

A first-world country like Singapore, touted as one of the best places in the world to live in, can’t afford the World Cup? Absurd and ridiculous.

In countries like Malaysia, free-to-air TV (really free as there’s no TV license fee unlike in Singapore where you literally have to pay the fee at gunpoint) are able to telecast World Cup soccer FOC. So where do our TV license fees go to?

If the worst-case scenario materializes, SG (Singapore) will be the laughing stock of the whole world.

A stock response among some Singaporeans to any complaint is If Malaysia (or Timbuktu) is so good why don’t you leave SG?

Thanks for the encouragement.

I might just do that.

After all, cycling even on footpaths in SG is criminalized!

  1. That staement you made about ….”leaving Singapore” was once spoken by Goh Chok Tong when he was the prime minister back in the 1990s.

No World Cup – I believe the whole thing is a spin doctor’s work.

  2. You may be right. However, soccer fans are on tenterhooks. Too rich to fail?
