Will World Cup make Singapore the laughing stock in ASEAN?

With barely six months to go, Singaporeans are on tenterhooks not knowing if the World Cup will be telecast here. Desperation seems to have seized some die-hard soccer fans as they contemplate leaving for neighbouring countries.

Some neighbouring countries do not impose a TV licence fee eg Malaysia, and yet their free-to-air TV plans to telecast the World Cup.

People are asking why can’t the authorities use our TV licence fee to defray the cost of the telecast. Why restrict it to production of community-related programmes that most people are not interested in?

Come to that, why impose a licence fee at all?

Singapore will be the laughing stock of ASEAN.

With a general election in the offing there’s certainly going to be a political fallout.
