2 reasons why Speak Good English Movement faces uphill task

The people behind the Speak Good English Movement are well-intentioned but I fear that theirs is a lost cause for two good reasons:

1. The influx of Chinese nationals who’ve formed enclaves and who refuse to learn English.

2. Singlish is to all intents and purposes the lingua franca in Singapore.

The other day I asked a salesgirl why there was no tag on a certain item.

She replied, “New come, no price one.”

I was almost tempted to reply, “So old come got price” but I resisted the temptation.
