Tharman says strong opposition good for PAP: Really?
I had to read it three times to check if my eyes were not too blurry watching too many EPL matches (3), and that it was not an April Fool’s Day joke.
The Finance Minister says a strong opposition is good for the PAP, the ruling party of over 40 years in Singapore.
Not just any opposition but a STRONG one to boot! If like me you are sceptical I cant blame you. I suspect he’s just trying to be PC or politically correct and these are merely empty words.
If the Minister is sincere, he will know how to do the right thing: stop hounding the opposition, introduce a level playing field and institute political reform.
An example of how silly, small-minded and ridiculous the government can be is when they take action against the opposition trying to sell a few party newsletters. In an earlier post, I pointed out that this is not an issue in Malaysia (Singapore human rights: disgraceful Part2, March 22).
My advice to the PAP is to be fair and ethical in their dealings with the opposition. Nothing wrong with wanting to hang onto power but don’t bulldoze your way through. Perhaps some in the Cabinet are fans of Machiavelli.
So on the eve of the General Election, don’t try to pull the wool over our eyes.
We want to see action NOT words.
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.
